I must admit I sometimes get a little exhausted reading about HOA problems across the country, as they seem countless and quite varied. One caught my (pig’s) eye, though, about a Kansas pig that is a center of an HOA controversy. Yup. It’s about a pig.
It turns out that Shera the pig has been a family friend of the Rookwoods for many years, due to a pet allergy experienced by the couple’s son. When the family decided to move into a Shawnee community HOA in Kansas, the city required a permit be applied for to ensure everything was, um, kosher:
According to the city:
“The City of Shawnee provided a permit for Shera at the family’s previous home in Shawnee. When they moved to a new home, City ordinance required they re-apply for a new permit. Part of the special animal permitting process requires owners to establish their animal is allowed under any existing HOA regulations. The process requires the City gather feedback from neighbors within 200 feet of the animal owner’s property, that feedback is then used in the decision to approve or deny the special pet permit.
And this:
Additionally, the HOA may have its own regulations that can supersede any decision made by the City in this case.
Here’s where things get, um, greasy. The HOA board president says that the permit was denied prior to move in by the Rookwoods. They moved in anyway.
Now, Rookwoods claim they’re being bullied. The HOA claims the Rookwoods are in violation of covenants (pig headed?). A real snootful of HOA trouble. And I can smell the bacon frying from here.
Well, it’s always he said, she said, but hey, there are rules in HOAs folks. The latest trend is to buck the rules until the system collapses. As always, such piggish behavior….
