An HOA in North Fort Myers, Florida has an unusual problem that they’re dealing with:  A concrete wall. Turns out that drivers are apparently running into it, and that means more than once, leaving the cost of repairs to the HOA residents on the other side.

From Florida station WINK TV:

Del Prado Boulevard is maintained by Lee County, but the concrete wall belongs to the Sabal Springs Golf and Racquet community. That means when a car leaves the roadway and slams into it, the cost falls on homeowners through HOA fees.

Sounds like this is becoming chronic. According to the report, the latest incident is the third crash into the wall in the past few years,  Residents told the station that the damage keeps piling up, and so do the repair bills.

Residents said they understand the wall is their responsibility, but they’re asking the county to help prevent future crashes — not just to avoid more repair costs, but because of what could happen next. Some homes sit just feet from the wall. Neighbors worry another out-of-control vehicle could go beyond the concrete and straight into a bedroom.

Guardrails have been considered, along with a reduction of the speed limit, and adding a traffic signal, which could slow drivers to prevent another crash. But according to Lee County officials, the wall is private property and Lee County DOT says it does not have a role in paying for any of the repairs. Maintenance and upkeep fall to the community, typically through the HOA.

The report doesn’t really say why drivers keep running into a wall with such force that it is causing damage. Maybe paint it bright red…

Neighbors said enforcement and safety changes can’t come soon enough. Until something changes, they worry the next crash won’t just damage a wall — it could destroy a home.
