I was on Gene Sullivan’s radio show, Where You Live, talking to him about the rally at the capitol last Wednesday where hundreds of HOA leaders assembled in opposition to HOA reform. Gene tapes his show in advance so you can listen to my interview on Saturday at 10 a.m. on AM1280 the Patriot.
The gist of the conversation revolved around our stance on the senate bill (SF1750), where we mostly stand opposed to any more regulation on top of the MCIOA legislation that already governs the HOAs and CICs in Minnesota (not to mention each HOA’s governing documents). The vast majority of HOA leaders are already doing a good job of managing those rules. In fact, the authors of the bill have admitted this fact.
We discussed how the legislation is an overreaction to a few poor performers, who represent just a small percentage of the nearly 1.3 million HOA residents in the metro. At the HOA Leadership Network, we are in favor of more education, rather than legislation. Board leaders, especially new ones, would benefit from education on governance, financial oversight, vendor management and reserve study analysis. Such education would be a much better solution than adding more laborious rules and regulations to the workload of volunteer HOA leaders.
I hope you tune in on Saturday. — Mark Foster
