The Villages

Things can get ugly in The Villages. You’ve undoubtedly heard over the decades all the hype about that property in Florida, where many moms and dads and grandmas and grandpas went to retire and warm their skin in the Florida sun. This unique HOA is described as a large retirement community located in the heart of Central Florida, 55 miles northwest of Orlando and 80 miles northeast of Tampa.

Sounds like a lot of traffic to me.

And not everything is Golden in the Golden Years. From Fox 35 Florida:

Wayne Anderson and his wife Bonnie received a complaint about the small, decorative cross on display in their yard in 2019 from the Village Community Development District 8, which oversees the central Florida community known as The Villages.

From the photos, the cross is about a foot high and was nestled near a planter in the yard. But a complaint by a fellow HOA resident got the board involved, and a 5-year dispute was in the offing:

Anderson said someone had anonymously complained about the 12-inch-tall cross, which has been affixed to a potted plant in their front yard. The notice they received said the cross violated community standards related to lawn ornaments, even though about a dozen of their neighbors also had small crosses on display, according to the report.

Anderson admits that the couple thought it was an April Fool’s joke at first, but then the fines started due to the rules violations. After refusing to remove the cross,  the homeowners’ association began issuing a $25 fine, per day. The last known cumulative fine amount, which was not paid, exceeded $44,000.

The legal fight went back and forth over 5 years, and a judge ordered both the HOA and the residents to settle out of court.  The result:

The Village Community Development District 8 was ordered to pay $173,000 in court and legal fees, as well as $70,000 to the Andersons. The couple will also get to keep their 12-inch cross in their front yard.

The cross wins. Read the whole story from the Independent, HERE.
