Kansas City Royals

It’s always intriguing to see different issues that affect HOAs and residents across the country, but this is the first one I’ve seen that involves America’s favorite pastime, and it’s not pickleball related for a change.

From Fox-TV-4 in Kansas City:

Homeowners Associations on the eastern edge of the city are coming out against the idea of a Kansas City Royals stadium going in at the northwest corner of 119th and Nall.

Ruh roh. We’ve heard of the dreaded pickleball courts making too much of that dinking sound when it’s too close to townhomes. And that looming water-guzzling giant of a data center could be coming to an HOA neighborhood near you if you’re really unlucky.  But a baseball stadium?

The Royals wouldn’t comment Tuesday, but their team’s confirmed they’re considering three sites, one in Overland Park, one in North Kansas City, and one in the downtown area of Kansas City. Where specifically in each of those three cities the Royals are looking to build, the team hasn’t said since the failed vote in April of 2024.

Apparently back in May, the team announced that an affiliate of theirs bought the mortgage on what is known as “the old Sprint campus,” now known as Aspiria. The HOA Hawthorne’s View, which is comprised of 69 homes, is stone’s throw from the preferred future stadium’s site.

The HOA president, Jeff Hurt, is calling a foul ball on this one hoping to strike it out.

“Frankly, I have not heard one individual be in favor of it,” Hurt said in an interview with FOX4 at his home Tuesday. “I’ve had no one in my neighborhood [say that]. Now we’re going to have our HOA annual meeting tomorrow night, and I’m going to ask. I will say, ‘Folks, if you’re in favor, tell me why. Convince me.’”

Several other HOAs have voiced their discontent for this looming project, and now the legislature is involved (let’s just call it a meeting at the mound).

Kansas Republican State Senate President Ty Masterson told FOX4 in October that he was expecting a proposal from the Royals at their Legislative Coordinating Council meeting either in late November or early December of this year.

We’ll keep our eye on the ball for this one. Read the story from Fox 4 HERE.
