Scrubbing the web for HOA news often reveals some typically anti-HOA stories, but this one from a gated community in Florida shows how great and strong HOA leaders can rise up to protect their own “homeland.”
A resident wrote a blog about an incident that involves a nearby lake that provides HOA residents with private access via a boat ramp. That access is meant only for residents of the gated HOA, so it’s their only convenient way onto the lake, a body of water that is not owned by the association.
The drama started when a resident decided to block the access by installing a post and a padlocked chain across the boat ramp, preventing anyone from boat access. So the HOA cut the lock. But the renewed access didn’t last.
The writer states:
Last year a homeowner (no idea if it was the same one) had their boat in at the dock, and would drive their truck down and park it on the grass by the dock.
The HOA response?
He was told numerous times to stop and to park in the small lot farther up from the ramp.
Not surprisingly, that didn’t work. So the board responded with a proper next step:
Finally all that worked was for the HOA (via board volunteers) to put up two no-parking signs on the grass, spaced to block the possibility of parking.
After all, parking on grass is usually obviously prohibited, and the board made the right call to post against the offensive behavior. But from then on, the resident started parking on the pavement near the bottom of the ramp, preventing anyone else from putting in a boat. The man was warned once again, but didn’t change his ways, until one day when someone was actually blocked and notified a board member to call towing.
That’s when those who do bad things get what they deserve. The writer states:
The tow company came out and at some point in the process, the truck rolled back into the lake up to the doors. I’m sure insurance covered the damage, but still nice that he had to deal with karma for his entitlement!
