We’re Number Ten! We’re Number Ten! But not in a good way.
A member pointed out a recent Axios article that summarizes median HOA and condo fees in each state. Such fees have been under a microscope of late due to rising costs of just about everything, not the least of which are insurance and labor costs. Turns out that in Minnesota, the typical monthly bill for such fees runs $269 — about twice the U.S. median of $135. That puts Minnesota 10th in the stack ranking, with NY, DC and HI favoring the top spots for monthly fees. (We’re number one in other places though, like fraud.)
See chart of all states below.
Many of our network members have reported triple-digit increases in insurance over the past five years, and that seems to be the main driver of rising HOA fees. But there is some solace when coupled with perspective. Axios notes:
Despite having the 10th-highest dues in the nation, Minnesota’s typical fees are still far below the median in New York ($739), Washington, D.C. ($505), and Hawaii ($470). Arkansas had the lowest, at just $49 a month.
The article does make a point that low fees are not necessary “a good thing,” especially if reserves are not being met.
The Axios article does go on to talk about HOA reform legislation in MN, which is set to come back in the 2026 legislative session after a tumultuous and dead-end session that fizzled in May.
[A] group of authors is already meeting via Zoom to work on what one lawmaker described as “long overdue” proposals ahead of the 2026 session DFL Rep. Kristin Bahner, the chief author in House, told Axios via text that the coalition hopes to build on a “strong bipartisan base of support in both chambers” to pass laws that create “greater transparency, accountability and restore critical consumer protections” next year.
At our HOA Day on October 30, we are planning to have an update on HOA reform legislation, what we know, what we don’t know, and how network members can get involved. If you haven’t done so already, please register. Join our network first (if you’re not a member) and register HERE for HOA Day.
