The sunshine state seems to have its fair share of HOA issues. There was a recent story about some Florida elected official(s) who want to ban them altogether. Rising insurance costs are causing some residents to simply abandon their HOA condos and walk away. And, sadly, rising tensions have been causing violence, including a recent double homicide at an HOA near Miami.

I was contacted yesterday by a reporter from WPBF-TV in West Palm Beach, and she asked me to do a Zoom interview about the rising tide of violence against HOA leaders there and the reasons behind it. I gladly accepted the interview, since fortunately, at least Minnesota, violence between residents and HOA Leaders has not become an issue, even with the regular drumbeat of swirling violence that seems to occur daily in active urban spots like nearby Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Obviously I’m not a Florida resident and am only an occasional sunburned tourist, but it’s not hard to imagine the stresses that are occurring in HOA-land due to rising insurance, labor and materials costs, and skyrocketing HOA fees. Such spikes have been especially steep in Florida, causing huge stresses on HOA residents and communities. But we all know that violence is inexcusable and it’s not the answer. Increasingly, at least in Florida, it has become a problem.

The written article on the TV station’s site is comprehensive and includes many of my comments to a large degree. The two-minute story that aired on that station tonight is tightly edited, but you’ll get the gist. Read the written article for the deeper view.
